Geek is cool. Geek is chic. Geeks own multimillion dollar software companies. Geeks excel at what they do. And geeks are you and me.
About Import Export Geeks
Hi. I'm Jim Dickeson. I'm a specialist in import/export compliance, and a licensed customs broker. I've spent over 20 years in international freight forwarding and customs brokerage, in-house trade compliance for a computer company, and consulting. And I'm an Import Export Geek.
I always had a knack for teasing software applications to get just what I need from them. And I've come to enjoy bringing multimedia technology into presentations and training. So it was only natural to combine these talents to develop the computer-based import/export compliance training now available to you through Import Export Geeks.
My Sweet Spot
There are a lot of experts in the field of import and export compliance. But few of them really grasp the concepts of eLearning. And there are a lot of eLearning developers out there. But they are seldom the subject matter experts.
Where these circle intersect is my niche. My sweet spot.
The Curse of Knowledge
A common complaint about most regulatory compliance training is that the instructors tend talk over the learners' heads. The trainers know their stuff very well. They just fail to connect with their audience. The problem is what's sometimes called "The Curse of Knowledge".
Lots of research in economics and psychology shows that when we know something, it becomes hard for us to imagine not knowing it. As a result, we become lousy communicators.
The better we get at generating great ideas - new insights and novel solutions - in our field of expertise, the more unnatural it becomes for us to communicate those ideas clearly. That's why knowledge is a curse. But notice we said "unnatural," not "impossible."
JFK dodged the Curse with "put a man on the moon in a decade". If he'd said, "Our mission is to become the international leader in the space industry, using our capacity for technological innovation to build a bridge towards humanity's future", it might have set a moon walk back fifteen years.
(Chip and Dan Heath, Made to Stick: Why Some Ideas Survive and Others Die)
At Import Export Geeks, we fight to dodge the Curse. Otherwise, we would have called ourselves something highfalutin like Trade Regulations Compliance Associates Conglomerated. Instead, we promise to communicate to you in a way that you understand. You'll get it, and you too will be an Import Export Geek.
Oh, and did I tell you that geek is chic?
